Once we have met nearly 50 years ago when Susan Sontag launches special article. This special article about the Hitler film was really important in this connection. And I think it's not just not only because of my doing and filmmaking, but, she made it happen. She wrote something that was really a standard. That means how can it be to make a masterpiece out of this, subject? Hitler coming from Germany. That was really for German audience impossible to think. It was the hel, so we had to look tolearn it. And we accepted it. And so she wrote that. And until today, Susan Sontag is very much, known and, present in Germany, but never in connection with my name ore the director of this Hitlerfilm, because it's a scandal. It cannot be. But for me now, we are 50 years later, and 50 years later means 50 years between. Between that time and now. But is that what happened in my life by doing making films? And that is, I think, it was interesting for me to speak about, what came after Hitler, this Hitler film was done. And now what happened in my life. There was Parsifal , that means Richard and Wagner was very important in connection with Hitler. But I met him before in connection with Ludwig. Ludwig was appreciated by by Hitler as well as Wagner. So we had already something very interesting. But after Richard Wagner, There has to be something more. So I left Wagner some years ---–later, at the beginning of the next period. Monologues. Monologues about German poetry one. Ten years. Monologues with Kleist and others, of course. So after Hitler, it was possible not only Wagner to do differently, Great, rich authors Hölderlin, Novalis, great greek authors, that was important to be free after Hitler to do that. Hours and hours. And then there was a break. And that's the end of the separation of east and west. And we have to find our way. Ten years no film. But it's not (bis hier korrigiert MGe)so, they thought so. It was not right. Because I made some years later. Documenta, in Germany was a place for art. And Susan Sontag said the film is not only a film, it was a piece of art. Hitler. Piece of art. So I made a room in, documenta, invited by a French, Catherine David. All germans said: No, no, don't take this man. But she did. She was French and she knows my films from Paris that meet Susan Sontag. So we were invited to make a room with 31 films projected

...And then you conclude that, well, at least we have the fill. We have to fill. And you bow to the altar of this film as if the film itself is somehow even more important than the fever

"Theodor Adorno, who very provocatively posed the terrible question, can there be art after Auschwitz? And the terrible tragedy of the world is yes, there can. Who today mourns for Carthage nobly? History has a way of making everybody fall asleep. And yet the man seated to my left continues, perhaps naively, to think that art can still be a redeeming feature of our life, and that the only artistic form that's...".
