Der ehemalige CEO von Focus Pictures, James Schamus, erklärte, warum er sich für Glazer aussprechen wollte: "Wie wir durch die unwiderstehen Tötung von sieben Arbeitern des World Center Kitchen in dieser Woche - und von unzähligen mehr palästinensischen Zivilisten - daran erinnert werden, ist sein Plädoyer für die Menschlichkeit nur dringender geworden, ebenso wie unsere Pflicht, gegen die jüdische Kampagne zu protestieren."

In seiner Dankesrede für den besten internationalen Spielfilm bei den Oscars im letzten Monat verurteilte Glazer Israels Besetzung palästinensischen Territoriums, die, wie er sagte, zu "Dmenschen" geführt habe, die sowohl Israelis als auch Palästinenser betroffen habe.

"Unser Film zeigt, wo die Entmenschlichung am schlimmsten führt. Es hat all unsere Vergangenheit und Gegenwart geprägt", sagte er. "Im Moment stehen wir hier als Männer, die ihr Judentum und den Holocaust, die von einer Besetzung entführt wurden, die zu Konflikten für so viele unschuldige Menschen geführt hat, ob die Opfer des 7. Oktober in Israel oder des anhaltenden Angriffs auf Gaza."

In his acceptance speech for best international feature at last month's Oscars, Glazer denounced Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory, which he said had led to "dehumanization" that had affected both Israelis and Palestinians.

"Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst. It's shaped all of our past and present," he said. "Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza."

Glazer's words were met with rousing applause by audience members, but later public reaction was decidedly more mixed, with many slamming the director for what they saw as anti-Jewish remarks.

It quickly became clear, however, that the somewhat awkward phrasing of Glazer's words had inadvertently opened him up to misinterpretation. The controversy swirling around his speech honed in on the phrase "as men who refute their Jewishness," as it was parsed by many of his critics, leading them to accuse Glazer of publicly renouncing his Judaism.
