SPEECH BY FREDERIC MITTERRAND - 14 February 2011
Dear Hans-Jürgen Syberberg,
In the universe of cinema, you are among those, who enjoy high demand not afraid, as a practitioner of the Gesamtkunstwerk, the concept of "total art work", which finds its sources in the Wagnerian century.
After you left your country of birth Pomerania, devote yourself to the study of literature and history in Munich, which will inspire your work. The survey of the history that characterizes it, is found naturally in your movie marathon HITLER, A FILM FROM GERMANY, with a length of 7 hours and 22 minutes (1978);
in your enthralling interview of Winifred Wagner, the granddaughter of the composer, on the friendly relations it with Hitler joined (1975), the date of the perversion of German culture against your cinema understands the exorcism to put into effect, and your Baroque Biography of Ludwig II of Bavaria (1972), where dancing in front of the guillotine in leather pants and parades on Mottorrad, without your dipping to forget in the universe de author Karl May (1974), this German Jules Verne, the furrow (lanes ) fathomed the popular literature and the honest and upright heroes estimated the admired leader.
If the movie with you on the epic meets, do not hesitate an unlikely and Homeric "Catalogue of the (war) ships" to tell, ranging from modern to contemporary times. The heart of your predominant interest is Germany and its myths, its culture, its history, from which the preacher makes his honey. More than the German memory, it is the European spasms that you explore in an equally daring as visionary trilogy.
You will quickly be recognized as an important filmmaker, capable of high-profile attention from critics to draw on: Serge Daney, but Philippe Lacour-Labarthe, or Gilles Deleuze. They are known by retrospectives in Paris Cinematek, but also at the Centre Georges Pompidou in 2003 - showing a retrospective of 20 of your films, and several exhibitions / installations of great spiritual span. Your movie also makes use of the language of visual arts, it is alive and sees itself as installation, since your PARSIFAL (1981) - with the use of a death mask of Richard Wagner and a woven structure - but also in the 31 films that are part of the CAVE THE MEMORY of 1997. Your installation Nietzsche-ECCE HOMO of 1994, an impressive statement of an artist living in the "descendants of Dionysus" beyond death, completes the search. They belong to a tradition of the Puritan radicalism in the way of Straub and Godard. From the monologue by FRITZ KORTNER FOR RECORDS (1966) - one of the outstanding actor of your country in its largest roll up to DREAM, WHAT ELSE? 1994, in which you Edith Clever, the Marquise of O by Rohmer, at the center - you realize film monologues that reveal the possibilities of a great actor and the means to bring them to refined, austere and thrifty way to advantage . More than works, your films, especially manifests sacred operas, which offer the "disenchantment of the world," the forehead.

Their aesthetics leave old paths, pushes himself head-on familiar: Bonds takes on films by Abel Gance, and Georges Méliès and his imagination and his irony, but also the German Impressionism from Murnau and Fritz Lang. It is New York, which makes the success of CALIGARI .... It's Paris, which makes the success of your LUDWIG, REQUIEM FOR A VIRGIN KING and guarantees the reception of your films in France during the German critics often fuels a form of incomprehension. No doubt, you say, because you seek the "conscious of the unconscious" to be an anthropologist of the myth to the extent where you bring it to light rather than increasing it.
Beyond your Custom fights, especially with Jürgen Habermas, you are always avant-garde, of which your Web site bears witness to one of the most versatile and one of the most stimulating, created by an artist websites that mirror your sophisticated aesthetics, but also the scene of all possible - video projections, Webcams, dialogues at a distance - in the dimensions of the aesthetics of excess.
.
For your so tight, so strong and so ambitious work, for your keen and broad view of European history, dear Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, we present to you on behalf of the French Republic, the insignia of the Commander of the Order des Arts et des Lettres
